Finishing and winding process in the paper industry
Once the drying process is finished, the reel of paper is passed on for further treatment and moving on to the finishing and winding process. This entails that another coating process will be applied depending on the specifications or requirements for the paper color and texture.
Another layer of calcium carbonate, clay, and talcum powder are added to the coating solution. Two more applications of the coating solution per each paper side are applied using the blade coating process, to create a smoother surface. At first, an excess solution is sprayed directly on the paper. However, this is scraped off by a steel blade creating a uniform surface as the irregularities of the paper are smoothed out. Each side of the paper are coated and dried in sequence to create the correct characteristics.
To apply a surface finish, the paper is placed in the super calendar machine. Here the paper is passed through up to 10 rollers. Each roller applies pressure and temperature. The rollers are made from different materials such as hard steel and soft rubber, depending on the type of gloss and surface treatment required.
Here 2 processes can occur: the paper can either be cut into sheets for a sheet press or remain in the roll for a web offset press.
Regardless of the form of the paper, from here they will be packed and moved to the warehouse. For the paper reel, they are wrapped in carton to avoid transportation damage. For the pallets of sheets, they are either shrink-wrapped or wrapped in reams so it can be delivered to the customers.

Solutions
In the after-drying section, the web of paper passes through heated calendar rolls that smoothen and compress the paper. In this section 2 types of nozzles are required. One type of nozzles to softly cool the paper. For this the TAIFUJet series air nozzles are optimal. The second type of nozzles are the BIM series which assist with moistening the web of paper.
To ensure that the showered water does not contain recipients that might affect the paper, a pipe cleaner should be implemented. In this case, the RSP series is the optimal self-driven pipe cleaning nozzle.
Moisture and humidification are important aspects within a paper and pulp mill, especially in the finishing and winding process. If the relative humidification level is not at the recommended percentage for the paper fabrication, it will not only affect the paper machines through ESD, but also it is detrimental to the reel or web of paper. The AKIMist®“E” Dry Fog Humidifier is the cost-effective solution to these challenges. Through its implementation it not only solves these issues and challenges but provides more benefits:
- “Dry Fog” is a fine mist that does not wet the wall, the floor, the machines, or the surrounding environment
- Reduction of sticking and inclusion of paper dust
- Suppression of airborne paper dust
- In large room or small space, AKIMist® “E” can raise up humidity stably and quickly. Ideal for static electricity control, paper-dust suppression and moisture control in rewinding, slitting packaging process, etc.
- Assists in establishing an ideal level of relative humidity, not too dry or too moisty, that assists in reducing the probability of the paper to curl and tear
